Hinterzartener Moor, Protected wetland area in Hinterzarten, Germany
Hinterzartener Moor is a large wetland in the southern Black Forest with diverse habitats and specialized plant life. The terrain includes open peat bog, forest sections, and a small lake that together form a varied natural landscape.
The area received protection status in 1941 and expanded in 1975 as authorities recognized the need to preserve these vulnerable ecosystems. The two phases of protection reflected growing understanding of wetland importance.
The reserve functions as a place where visitors connect with nature and learn about wetland ecosystems through direct observation. Educational markers guide people through the landscape, helping them understand how these habitats work.
The area is accessible through marked trails, with some paths suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Spring and summer offer the best conditions for walking, when paths are dry and plants are in bloom.
The small lake contains plant species that survived from the Ice Age and normally grow only in much colder regions. These relics reveal how climate and landscape have transformed over millennia.
