Hochfirst, Mountain summit in Black Forest, Germany
Hochfirst is a mountain summit in the Black Forest, situated between the towns of Saig and Titisee-Neustadt at 1,190 meters (3,900 ft) above sea level. On the top stands a steel lattice observation tower, and on the slope below there is a ski jumping hill used for international competitions.
A wooden observation tower was built on the summit in 1888, but a storm destroyed it shortly after. The current steel lattice structure replaced it in 1890 and has stood on the peak ever since.
The Hochfirstschanze is one of the few ski jumping venues in Germany that regularly hosts World Cup events. In winter, spectators gather on the hillside to watch the jumps from close range.
The summit can be reached on foot from several starting points, with the most direct trail beginning in Saig. Weather can change quickly at this elevation, so sturdy footwear and a waterproof layer are worth bringing.
On very clear days, the view from the steel tower extends to the Alps of three countries, including Mont Blanc. This makes it one of the few spots in the Black Forest where such distant peaks come into sight.
