Obstmarkt-Bunker, Air raid shelter and hotel beneath Obstmarkt, Nuremberg, Germany
The Obstmarkt-Bunker is an underground complex on several levels beneath central Nuremberg. The rooms cover 900 square meters and include bedrooms, bathrooms and technical installations for heating and water supply.
The complex was built in 1941 as a shelter for 450 people during air raids on Nuremberg. After the war it served from 1948 as accommodation for journalists covering the trials in the city.
The name refers to the fruit market that stands directly above the complex. Visitors today can see how military shelter spaces were converted into private hotel rooms with washbasins and furniture.
Guided visits through the rooms beneath the market square take place on selected dates and show the original equipment. Access is via steps leading down into the depth.
The facility sits 15 meters (49 feet) below street level and requires electric pumps running around the clock. Without these pumps groundwater would flood the rooms within a short time.
