Mediaeval Dungeons
Medieval Dungeons is a museum in Nuremberg that displays authentic prison chambers dating back to the Middle Ages. The rooms sit beneath the town hall and preserve original stone structures along with historical objects that record the justice system of that era.
The dungeons were built in the Middle Ages as a court prison beneath the seat of city authority. They served as a detention facility for centuries and were later preserved as a museum to protect the city's medieval legal history.
Access is through the town hall, and the rooms are partly cramped and low-ceilinged. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be ready to move through an authentic, unvarnished historical space.
The dungeons still display graffiti and inscriptions that prisoners carved into the walls. These personal markings provide direct glimpses into the lives of those who were held there.
