Radarstellung Kalkhorst, Military radar station in Kalkhorst, Germany.
Radarstellung Kalkhorst is an active Bundeswehr military installation located north of the village of Kalkhorst, near the Baltic coast in northern Germany. It is equipped with a D-band phased array radar system used for continuous airspace monitoring over the region.
During World War II, the Wehrmacht operated a Würzburg-Riese radar at this site for air defense purposes. After the war, the Bundeswehr took over the location and updated it through several rounds of technical renewal.
The station sits in open farmland close to the Baltic coast, creating a noticeable contrast between the flat rural setting and the technical equipment rising above it. Passing the site on the road, visitors can see the radar structure clearly against the open sky.
The site is an active military base and cannot be entered without special authorization, so a visit from the outside is the only option for most people. It is easy to spot from the road near the village of Elmenhorst, where the radar structure is visible above the treeline.
Between 1993 and 1996, the entire facility was rebuilt from scratch, replacing a Soviet-era installation on the same ground. This complete reconstruction in just a few years was unusual for a coastal radar station of this size in Germany.
