Radarstellung Kalkhorst, Military radar station in Kalkhorst, Germany.
Radarstellung Kalkhorst is a military facility north of the village near the Baltic coast, equipped with modern radar for airspace monitoring. The installation uses a D-band phased array radar system for continuous surveillance of air traffic over the region.
The first radar installation at this site was operated by the Wehrmacht during World War II, using a Würzburg-Riese system for air defense. After the war, the location developed into a strategic monitoring point for the Bundeswehr with several technological overhauls.
The station shows the evolution of German military technology from its early days to today. Visitors can see how technologies have developed over decades, from early systems to modern facilities.
The facility is located about 1 kilometer south of the Baltic coast and is accessible from the nearby village of Elmenhorst. Since it is an active military site, visits are only possible with special permission.
Between 1993 and 1996, the entire facility underwent a complete reconstruction, transforming from a Soviet-era installation into a modern Bundeswehr facility. This total rebuild made it one of the most advanced radar stations on the North and Baltic Sea coasts.
