Lake Bosumtwi, Impact crater lake in Ashanti Region, Ghana.
Lake Bosumtwi spreads across 49 square kilometers, reaching depths of 81 meters within a circular crater formation surrounded by forested mountains.
The lake emerged from an asteroid impact 1.07 million years ago, creating a crater that gradually filled with water through rainfall and natural processes.
The Ashanti people consider the lake sacred, believing it serves as a gathering point for departed souls to bid farewell to the goddess Asase Ya.
Visitors access the lake through the village of Abono, where they can arrange wooden plank boat rides and learn about local conservation at the information center.
Three species of cichlid fish inhabit the waters, including the Hemichromis frempongi, which exists naturally only in this lake.
