Athos, Orthodox monastic mountain in Chalkidiki, Greece

Athos is a forested peak rising sharply from a narrow peninsula that juts into the northern Aegean Sea over roughly 30 miles. The summit reaches just over 6500 feet (2000 meters) and towers above the monasteries and hermitages scattered along its slopes.

Monks began settling the peninsula during the 10th century and established communities devoted to Orthodox prayer. Over time the monasteries gained self-governance and evolved into a separate monastic territory.

The mountain hosts twenty Eastern Orthodox monasteries containing extensive collections of medieval manuscripts, religious artifacts, and Byzantine art dating back several centuries.

Access is restricted to male visitors who must apply for a special permit through authorities in Thessaloniki. Permits are issued in limited numbers, so planning ahead is recommended for any visit.

The peninsula has followed a rule for over a thousand years that prohibits female beings of any age from entering its territory. This regulation extends to domestic and farm animals, which the monastic communities must account for in their daily routines.
