Nea Kameni, Volcanic island in Aegean Sea, Greece
Nea Kameni rises 114 meters above sea level with a diameter of 2 kilometers and consists entirely of black lava formations.
The island emerged through multiple volcanic eruptions since 47 CE, with significant activity periods in 1707-1712, 1866-1870, 1925-1928, and 1939-1941.
Scientists from the Institute for the Study and Monitoring of the Santorini Volcano conduct research on the island to understand volcanic mechanisms.
Visitors reach the island via boats from Santorini ports and follow a marked gravel path to explore the volcanic crater formations.
The sulfur vent named Jorgo received its name from King George I of Greece after demonstrating activity during his visit to Santorini.
