Nea Kameni, Volcanic island in Aegean Sea, Greece
Nea Kameni is a volcanic island in the Aegean Sea made entirely of black lava formations rising above sea level. Visitors walk along a marked gravel path that crosses the barren landscape to reach the crater rim.
The island was born from volcanic eruptions starting in 47 CE and experienced major activity bursts in the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s. Each eruption reshaped the landscape and expanded the island.
Researchers use the island as a living laboratory to study volcanic processes and monitor how active systems behave.
Boats depart regularly from Santorini ports and drop visitors on the shore. Wear sturdy shoes because the volcanic ground is rough and uneven in places.
A sulfur vent carries the name of a European king who observed it during a visit to the region. This unusual naming shows how historical moments become part of a place's geography.
