Kassope, Archaeological site in Kamarina, Greece

Kassope is an ancient Greek city in northwestern Greece, set on a hill near the modern town of Preveza and overlooking the Ambracian Gulf. The remains include city walls, public buildings, and residential structures arranged along a grid of streets.

The city was founded around the mid-4th century BC as the capital of the Kassopaeans, a tribe of Epirus. Roman forces destroyed it in 168 BC, after which it was abandoned and never rebuilt.

The excavated streets and housing blocks show how a Greek city of the 4th century BC worked day to day, with spaces for gathering, trade, and living side by side. Walking through the site, you can still clearly read the boundary between public open areas and private homes.

The site sits on a hillside, so sturdy footwear is a good idea since the ground is uneven and some climbs are needed to reach different parts. Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable, as the heat is lower and the view over the gulf is clearer.

Kassope was never built over after its abandonment, which means the original city layout can still be read on the ground almost in full. This makes it one of the few ancient Greek cities where the overall plan can be taken in as a whole from a single viewpoint.
