Magnesia Regional Unit

Magnesia Regional Unit is an administrative area in Thessaly that stretches from the Pagasetic Gulf to the Aegean Sea, including mainland territories and the Northern Sporades islands. The region contains varied landscapes and several major settlements, with Volos serving as the regional center.

The region got its name from the ancient Magnetes, a tribe that founded settlements here during the early periods of Greek civilization. This early settlement established the foundation for the region's long-lasting role in the ancient world.

The regional capital Volos keeps its connection to Greek mythology through the story of Jason and the Argonauts, which started in this region. This legendary tale still shapes how people here see their place and its role in Greek culture.

The region has major transportation connections including the Volos port, the Airport of Central Greece in Nea Anchialo, and regular bus services to larger cities. Visitors can reach and explore the different areas by both water and land routes.

Lake Karla was drained in 1962 to create farmland, but today restoration work aims to bring back the water body and its natural value. This transformation shows the shift from land use intensity toward environmental recovery.
