Odeon of Pericles, Ancient musical theater at Acropolis foot, Athens, Greece
The Odeon of Pericles covered 4,000 square meters and featured a distinctive square design with ninety internal pillars arranged in nine rows.
Built in 435 BC and destroyed during Sulla's siege of Athens in 87-86 BC, the structure was later rebuilt by Ariobarzanes II of Cappadocia.
The theater hosted musical contests during the Panathenaea festival and contained an orchestra space for choruses and storage rooms for ceremonial items.
Located at the southeastern base of the Acropolis at coordinates 37.970556, 23.728611, the site remains accessible for historical research and visits.
The roof was constructed using timber from captured Persian ships, creating a square pyramid shape that differed from traditional circular odeon designs.
