Agia Eleousa Monastery, Achaia, Orthodox monastery in Salmeniko, Greece
Agia Eleousa Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in Salmeniko situated at about 610 meters elevation in the northeast foothills of Panahaiko mountain. The site is surrounded by natural landscapes and traditional villages and consists of ruins of the original building with preserved frescoes.
The monastery was founded in 1510 and later relocated from its original site near Pititsa village because severe winter conditions made daily operations difficult. This move marked a turning point in the site's history and shaped its future development.
The monastery displays frescoes from the 17th and 18th centuries that reflect Byzantine artistic traditions visible in the ruins of its original building. These artworks tell the story of the site's religious past and shape how the complex appears to visitors.
The monastery is reachable via the road from Agios Vasileios through Rio to Kamares, which runs between the villages of Pititsa, Voteni, and Salmeniko. Visiting requires advance planning since the location is remote and some sections of the road may be unpaved.
The monastery transitioned from a male to a female community in 1947 after experiencing multiple closures and reconstructions throughout its history. This transformation is a rare example of institutional changes in the region's Orthodox monastic life.
