Prytaneion of Olympia

The Prytaneion stands as a square structure measuring 32.80 meters on each side, located in the northwest corner of the Olympia sanctuary near the entrance of Altea.

Construction of the Prytaneion took place at the end of the 6th century BC, serving as the seat for officials who conducted monthly sacrifices in ancient Olympia.

The building contained a dining area where officials organized ceremonial meals during the Olympic Games and maintained the sacred fire on the Altar of Hestia.

Interior sections of the Prytaneion remain closed to visitors, but the exterior structure demonstrates the architectural design of ancient Greek administrative buildings.

The Prytaneion functioned as the central administrative office for the Elis region, combining religious rituals with governmental duties in a single complex.
