Prytaneion of Olympia, Ancient administrative building in Ancient Olympia Municipality, Greece
The Prytaneion is a square building located in the northwest corner of the Olympia sanctuary, positioned near the sanctuary entrance. Its structure shows how ancient Greek builders designed administrative spaces that served both official and religious functions.
Construction of the building took place at the end of the 6th century BC and served as the seat of sanctuary officials. It remained a center for religious and administrative activities that sustained the operations of the sacred site.
Officials gathered here for ceremonial meals during the Olympic Games, making it a place where important decisions and traditions were observed. The sacred fire that burned inside connected this building to religious practices that defined daily life in the sanctuary.
You can view the exterior of the building as you walk through the site, but the interior remains closed to visitors. A walk around the outside gives you a clear sense of how it was positioned within the sacred space and its scale.
This building merged government administration and religious practice under one roof, a combination that shaped how the entire Olympia sanctuary functioned. The way officials conducted both state business and sacred rituals here reveals how intertwined politics and religion were in ancient Greece.
