Temple of Zeus in Olympia, Ancient Greek temple in Olympia, Greece.

The Temple of Zeus is an ancient Greek sanctuary in Olympia, Greece, that dominates the archaeological grounds with its collapsed columns and foundations. Stone blocks and Doric capitals lie scattered in the grass where a rectangular limestone peristyle once stood.

Construction began around 472 before Christ under architect Libon of Elis and continued until roughly 456 before Christ. An earthquake in the sixth century after Christ finally toppled the structure.

The name honors Zeus, chief god of the Greeks, and the sanctuary was visited for centuries by pilgrims who brought their offerings. Remains of the monumental columns and drums now lie scattered among wildflowers across the grounds.

The grounds lie open under the sun, so visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon works best. Solid footwear is advisable because of the uneven stones and terrain.

The temple once housed a statue of Zeus made from gold and ivory that was counted among the Seven Wonders. This figure disappeared in the fifth century after Christ without clear traces of its whereabouts.
