Leonidaion

The Leonidaion is an ancient residential building with a rectangular design framed by columns and organized around multiple inner courtyards. Rooms and chambers branch off from these courtyards, creating a spacious layout that allowed for natural light and air circulation.

The building was constructed around 300 BCE to serve as lodging for athletes and officials attending the Olympic Games. It remained in use for more than 600 years until the ancient games ceased in 394 CE.

The building functioned as a social hub where athletes and officials gathered, ate meals together, and prepared mentally for their competitions. Its central courtyards created natural meeting spaces for these daily interactions.

Plan to spend time walking through the ruins to fully understand the layout and purpose of different sections. Visiting at quieter times of day helps you better appreciate the structure without crowds getting in the way.

The building included a sophisticated water delivery system made of terracotta pipes that brought fresh water throughout the structure. This engineering shows that ancient builders understood how to provide comfort and convenience to its occupants.
