Palaestra at Olympia

The Palaestra features a square courtyard surrounded by columns, with adjacent rooms designed for physical training and preparation of athletes.

Built during the 3rd century BCE, this gymnasium complex served as a training center for athletes participating in the Olympic Games.

Athletes gathered in the Palaestra to practice wrestling, boxing, and other physical activities under the guidance of specialized trainers.

The remains of the Palaestra occupy 66 meters on each side and contain visible stone foundations marking the original training spaces.

Archaeological findings within the Palaestra include ancient exercise equipment and bathing facilities connected to an underground water system.
