Moulin Rouge, Cabaret and music venue in Montmartre district, Paris, France
The Moulin Rouge is a cabaret and music venue in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris, recognizable by the red windmill on its facade. The hall seats over eight hundred guests who attend nightly performances featuring dance and musical acts.
Founder Joseph Oller opened the venue in the late nineteenth century and popularized the French cancan as a recognized dance form. The stage later became a model for cabarets in other cities.
Audiences watch performers from different countries who collaborate in a choreography that blends Parisian tradition with international influences. The costumes are crafted in workshops by feather artists such as those at Maison Février, who maintain and pass down their techniques across generations.
Visitors should reserve seats in advance, especially if they wish to include dinner with champagne, and follow the required dress code. Performances take place only in the evening, so planning for a late night is necessary.
The current revue uses over one thousand costume pieces that are changed in seconds between acts. Backstage, a large crew ensures that props and stage equipment operate without visible breaks.
