Barrage de la Gittaz

The Barrage de la Gittaz is an arch-gravity dam built in the Beaufortain Mountains that stretches 164 meters across the valley. This concrete structure rises 66 meters tall and was constructed to manage water flow and generate electricity for the surrounding Alpine region.

Construction of this dam began in 1967 as part of a major hydroelectric development project in the French Alps. It was built to help manage and use the mountain waters for electricity production across the region.

The dam represents a milestone in French engineering achievements, demonstrating the national commitment to hydroelectric power development in the Alps region.

Summer is the best time to visit since mountain roads become difficult or impassable during winter due to snow and ice. Check local conditions before heading out, as spring melt-off can also affect road access during transition seasons.

The dam features a distinctive spillway design that resembles a ski jump, allowing water to be discharged forcefully down the mountainside. This engineering solution prevents erosion while efficiently managing excess water during periods of heavy runoff.
