Rocher du Vent

Rocher du Vent is a mountain summit in Beaufort reaching 2,360 meters with a dramatic rock face overlooking the Roselend and Gittaz lakes. The massif offers climbing routes and hiking trails with sweeping views of both lakes and the surrounding high alpine terrain.

Via ferrata routes at this summit originated from military developments designed historically to speed troop movement through difficult mountain terrain. These secured climbing passages reflect how alpine passes were opened for strategic purposes over time.

The alpine huts in the area are part of Savoyard cheese-making traditions, especially for producing Beaufort cheese on the surrounding pastures. Visitors can watch cows grazing on the mountain meadows and observe the artisanal cheese production that continues throughout the region.

The best time to hike is in summer and early autumn when snow and ice have melted and the trails are easily passable. A headlamp is essential for safely crossing the via ferrata sections and tunnels.

A permanent snowfield persists inside the summit year-round, even as summer warmth melts everything around it. This hidden natural feature sits at about 2,330 meters and is accessible via a ridge route.
