Pointe des Poulains, Nature reserve peninsula in Sauzon, France.
Pointe des Poulains is a nature reserve on a peninsula at the northwestern tip of Belle-Île-en-Mer, with granite cliffs, coastal plants, and rocky terrain shaped by Atlantic waves. The site is divided into three zones that include a historic military structure, an active lighthouse, and walking paths along the shoreline.
The site began as a military fortification and passed into the hands of French actress Sarah Bernhardt in 1895, who used it as her summer home until 1922. That shift from a strategic post to a private residence changed how the place was known and remembered.
A small museum space on the site is dedicated to Sarah Bernhardt, with photographs and personal objects from her time here on display. Walking through it gives a sense of how she used this remote corner of Belle-Île-en-Mer as a retreat from her Paris stage life.
The site is open to visitors between Easter and All Saints Day, so a visit outside that window is not possible in the same way. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, as the paths cross rough ground and run along exposed cliffs where the wind off the Atlantic can be strong.
The lighthouse was built in 1868 and now runs on solar panels, which is rare for a working navigation aid in such a remote location. This setup allows it to operate independently from the mainland power grid while still guiding ships along the coast.
