Lac Vert

Lac Vert is a glacial lake nestled in the Vosges mountains at about 1044 meters elevation, spanning several hectares with depths reaching 17 meters in places. Steep mountainsides and coniferous forests surround the waters, creating a compact alpine setting.

The lake was born during the last Ice Age when retreating glaciers carved a basin into the Vosges bedrock. This ancient glacial sculpting created the depression that now holds the water.

The lake holds meaning for nearby communities who have long depended on its waters and surroundings as part of local life. People from the valley view it as a natural anchor point that shapes how they experience the mountains.

Marked hiking trails from the Munster valley approach the lake and require sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing. Conditions on the paths vary with seasons, so planning ahead helps ensure a comfortable visit.

The water takes on deep green hues from June through July due to algae growth and the dense fir forests surrounding it. This visual quality makes the lake particularly distinctive during those months.
