La Guillotière, Multicultural district in Lyon, France
La Guillotière is a neighborhood on the eastern bank of the Rhône that brings together residential areas, commercial streets, and public squares. The district spreads across multiple blocks with a varied network of streets and open spaces.
The area was originally a separate commune in the Isère department before merging with Lyon in 1852. This annexation marked a major eastward expansion of the city.
The neighborhood reveals itself through restaurants and shops from North Africa and Asia that shape the streets. This cultural mix also appears in the murals scattered throughout the area.
The neighborhood is well served by metro line D, several tramway lines, and bus routes. Walking around the area is straightforward with good pedestrian infrastructure.
Two major cemeteries spanning 18 hectares (44 acres) are located here, including the burial place of the Lumière brothers. These pioneers of cinema technology found their final resting place in this district.
