Pont Saint-Martial, Medieval stone bridge in Limoges, France

Pont Saint-Martial is a medieval stone bridge that crosses the Vienne River in Limoges, measuring about 85 meters in length. It features seven granite arches arranged in a distinctive arched form, with a stone-paved surface that shows its age and craftsmanship.

Construction began in 1215 on foundations left by earlier Roman settlement in the area. For over twelve centuries, it served as the only way to cross the Vienne, making it essential to how the city grew and connected its two banks.

The bridge takes its name from Saint Martial, a third-century bishop who brought Christianity to the Limoges region. This connection remains visible in how locals refer to and recognize this important crossing in their city's religious heritage.

You can reach the bridge from Rue du Pont Saint-Martial, which connects the city center to the left bank of the river. Walking across from either side gives you good views of the structure and the surrounding banks.

The bridge is known for its distinctive arched shape, which gives it an unusual appearance quite different from modern structures. This curved design allowed medieval builders to create a structure strong enough to withstand the river's powerful currents.
