Cité des métiers et des arts de Limoges

The Cité des Métiers et des Arts in Limoges is a craftsmanship museum located in a historic district that occupies multiple floors. It displays around seventy-five masterpieces representing different traditional trades such as carpentry and cabinetmaking.

The building was constructed in the 19th century as an extension of a diocesan seminary and built upon the remains of a former abbey. This abbey had been dissolved in the 18th century, leaving behind only its foundations.

The exhibition shows the traditions of French craft guilds and how apprentices completed their journeys across the country. Visitors can see how this old culture of learning and craftsmanship remains alive today in the displayed works.

The museum is easily accessible on foot and located centrally in the old town of Limoges. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the exhibitions spread across multiple levels throughout the building.

The vaulted cellars beneath the building come from the former abbey and now serve as exhibition spaces for rotating collections. These underground rooms provide a special setting for displaying temporary artwork.
