Synagogue Michkenot Israël, Jewish religious center in 19th arrondissement, France
Synagogue Michkenot Israël is a modern house of worship with a rectangular facade featuring alternating matte and glossy bands made with steel construction. The interior uses large open volumes and draws natural light through rectangular windows and an opening above the Holy Ark.
The synagogue was founded in 1993 to serve the growing Jewish community that had settled in the neighborhood during the early 1990s. The project emerged from a real need to create a prayer space for nearly 300 families who had moved to the area during that time.
The name Michkenot Israël reflects the Jewish community that gathers here to worship and celebrate together. The building serves as a meeting place where neighborhood residents practice their faith and observe religious traditions.
The building is located on Rue Jean-Nohain and features staircases and elevators to access different levels. Visitors should expect separate prayer areas on different floors and should prepare for a formal, respectful setting when entering.
The interior features a striking wooden Holy Ark with a triangular design that holds the Torah scrolls and is draped with a deep red curtain called the parokhet. This element serves as the focal point of the prayer space and draws the eye of anyone who enters.
