Puig de Pèl de Ca, Mountain summit between Valmanya and Corsavy, France.
Pic de Pel de Ca is a mountain summit between Valmanya and Corsavy in the Pyrenees-Orientales, standing at 2266 meters high. The peak has steep, rocky slopes and rises prominently from the surrounding terrain, offering views across forested valleys and neighboring mountain ridges.
The mountain was historically connected to iron mining in the Batera area, where operations ran from the 19th through much of the 20th century. These extraction sites shaped settlement and land use across the surrounding mountain region for several generations.
The area around this summit was historically a passage for shepherds moving their flocks between summer and winter grazing grounds. This pastoral tradition shaped the mountain landscape over centuries and remains visible in the paths that visitors and herds still follow today.
The GR10 hiking trail from Batere leads to the summit via marked paths and stone cairns on a route of about 8.5 kilometers. The climb takes roughly four hours and requires sturdy hiking boots plus attention to steep sections and changing weather conditions.
The summit serves as a natural vantage point for Griffon vultures, which regularly soar around the peak using thermal air currents. These large raptors are especially common in warmer months and offer a rare wildlife spectacle for attentive observers.
