Punta della Vacca Morta, Mountain summit in Corsica, France
Punta della Vacca Morta is a 957-meter (3,140-foot) peak on Corsica offering panoramic views across the Tyrrhenian Sea and the island's southern mountain ridges. The summit sits along a traditional hiking route that connects different valleys and landscape zones.
Bronze Age ruins of a fortress called Casteddu di l'Accintu lie near the summit, spanning more than 2,000 square meters. These remains reveal that high mountain regions were fortified and inhabited during ancient times.
The name comes from local Corsican tradition of naming peaks after distinctive features, and means Dead Cow Peak in the island's language. A wooden cross topped with a cow skull marks the summit, creating a striking landmark that stands out against the sky.
The most direct approach starts from Cartalavone village using the Mare a Mare South hiking path, which eventually reaches Foce Alta pass. From this pass, the final stretch up to the summit begins.
The Ortolo River originates from this peak and supplies water to southern Corsican communities below. This water source makes the mountain an essential point in the island's natural water distribution system.
