Cime de l'Aspre, Mountain summit in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Cime de l'Aspre is a mountain summit in the southern French Alps standing at 2433 meters with steep slopes and grass-covered terrain. The peak alternates between rocky sections and open faces that remain mostly snow-free throughout much of the year.

An astronomical observatory once occupied the summit but was later moved to lower elevations where conditions proved more suitable for observations. This relocation represented a significant shift in how the scientific community approached mountain-based research.

The name Aspre comes from a French word meaning harsh or rugged, capturing the exposed nature of this summit. The sparse vegetation found here speaks to the severe conditions created by constant wind.

The approach starts from the small hamlet of Les Tourres and follows the marked GR 52A trail with red and white blazes. The terrain is exposed and windswept, so visitors should prepare for changeable weather and bring proper mountain gear.

The summit still holds visible remains of the former scientific equipment, serving as quiet reminders of the location's astronomical past. From this vantage point, visitors can see across multiple mountain ranges and experience an unusual perspective on how far vision extends in the Alps.
