Gori is a regional capital in Shida Kartli, Georgia, located where the Mtkvari and Liakhvi rivers meet. The town ranks among the five most populous centers in the eastern part of the country.
The fortress emerged in the 7th century under the name Tontio and served as a military post between the eastern and western parts of Georgia. Over the centuries, the site remained a strategic junction in the region.
