Zarzma monastery

The monastery complex features multiple structures including a domed central church, a bell tower, and four smaller churches in a cross-in-square arrangement.

Founded in the 8th century by Monk Serapion, the monastery underwent reconstruction in the 14th century under the patronage of Prince Beka I of Georgia.

The monastery walls display numerous frescoes depicting religious cycles and historical figures, representing Georgian medieval artistic traditions.

The monastery maintains an active community of Georgian monks and accepts visitors interested in religious architecture and medieval Georgian history.

The bell tower was transformed into the Church of St John the Apostle in 1577, demonstrating architectural adaptation through centuries.
