The fortress stands on Azeuli Hill at an elevation of 1338 meters, featuring defensive walls and towers constructed with traditional Georgian masonry techniques.
King Bagrat IV captured the fortress from emir Fadlon in the 1060s, marking a significant victory in the medieval Georgian military campaigns.
The fortress represents Georgian feudal architecture from the 11th century and includes defensive elements that demonstrate medieval military engineering principles.
Visitors can reach the fortress by taking a 20-kilometer drive southwest from Tbilisi, following the road toward the town of Kojori.
Queen Tamar of Georgia spent six months at the fortress recovering from an illness, leading to its status as a royal residence.
