Cathedral of the Annunciation in Sukhumi

The Cathedral of the Annunciation stands with its Neo-Byzantine architecture, featuring domed structures and intricate stone details against the Caucasus Mountains background.

Built between 1909 and 1915 by the Greek community, the cathedral changed from Saint Nicholas Church to its current name during the Soviet period.

The cathedral functions as the central religious building for the Eparchy of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazia, conducting regular Eastern Orthodox services.

Visitors can reach the cathedral through Babushara Airport or by taking a train connection from Moscow to the central district of Sukhumi.

The cathedral underwent renovations in 2011 under the leadership of Vissarion Apliaa, who established an independent Abkhazian Orthodox religious administration.
