Kamani Church, Medieval monastery in Kamani, Georgia
Kamani Church is a medieval stone building located north of Sukhumi on the eastern shore of the Black Sea. The structure follows a hall church design and lacks prominent apse elements.
The original medieval church stood until the 1880s, when a Christian monastery was established under Russian rule. The buildings fell into decline after the Soviet era.
The church carries the name of Saint John Chrysostom, whom local tradition holds found shelter here after his banishment from Constantinople. Visitors and faithful who come today honor him as an important protector of the region.
The monastery operates under the jurisdiction of the Abkhazian Orthodox Church, and access depends on current regional conditions. Visitors should check the local situation beforehand and show respect for the sacred space when visiting.
The site witnessed the 1993 Kamani incident, when two Orthodox priests, Father Yuri Anua and Father Andria Kurashvili, lost their lives during the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict. This event left deep marks on the community's history.
