Драндский монастырь, Orthodox monastery in Dranda, Georgia.
Drandski Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in the village of Dranda, in the Gulrypsh district of Georgia, built around the Dormition Cathedral as its main structure. The cathedral is a brick building in the Byzantine style, with a cross-dome plan and a tall, prominent drum supporting the central dome.
An early church on this site dates to the 6th or 7th century, making it one of the oldest Christian structures in the region. The current monastery was founded in 1880 but was closed by Soviet authorities in 1928, reopening only after the Soviet period ended.
The monastery is an active Orthodox site today, with monks in residence and services held regularly. Visitors can enter the cathedral and observe the icons and Byzantine decorations beneath the dome up close.
The monastery is in the village of Dranda, not far from the coast, and is easy to reach from the main road. A morning visit tends to be quieter, giving more time to look around the cathedral without distraction.
A baptismal font found inside the cathedral during excavations in 1981 suggests the site was used as a baptistery in early Christian times. This is unusual for a monastery of this size and points to a wider role it once played for the surrounding communities.
