Kutaisi State Historical Museum

The Kutaisi State Historical Museum occupies a former bank building and displays over 230,000 objects across two floors. Ten exhibition rooms present artifacts from Western Georgia spanning from the 9th century BC through the late medieval period.

Founded in 1921, this institution preserves artifacts from Western Georgia spanning the ancient period through the late medieval era. During Soviet occupation, it played a key role in rescuing cultural and religious objects from destruction.

The collection displays ancient Georgian goldsmith works, metalwork, ceramics, and textiles that were rescued from regional churches during the Soviet period.

The building is easy to locate and well-signposted, with proper lighting and clear organization throughout the exhibition spaces. Plan for adequate time to explore the extensive holdings across multiple rooms.

The Gold Treasury hall underwent renovation in 2005 and displays rare objects that reveal connections between Georgian history and Roman, Byzantine, and Oriental cultures. These pieces illustrate the historical trade routes that crossed the region.
