South Savo

South Savo is a region in Eastern Finland composed of rural municipalities, woodlands, and water bodies that shape its landscape. The terrain alternates between forested areas and farmland, with lakes distributed throughout the terrain.

The region was reorganized into its current administrative form in the late 1990s, uniting several municipalities under one authority. Its rural character developed over centuries as part of Finland's settlement patterns.

Local traditions in Southern Savonia emphasize fishing practices, forest management, and agricultural methods that reflect Finnish rural lifestyle.

Mikkeli serves as the central hub connecting the scattered municipalities through a network of roads. A car is the most practical way to travel between different communities in this region.

Water covers a surprisingly large portion of the total area, giving the region a more aquatic character than many other parts of the country. These lakes play an important role in local livelihoods and recreation.
