Länsimetro, Metro line extension in Espoo and Helsinki, Finland
Länsimetro is a metro line extension in Espoo and Helsinki that expands the rail system westward through two parallel underground tunnels, connecting central Helsinki with residential areas in Espoo. The system includes multiple stations that link different neighborhoods and transportation hubs together.
The project grew from decades of planning before construction began in 2009, carried out in two phases. The first phase opened in 2017, while the second phase was completed in 2022, making the extension fully operational.
The metro connects different residential neighborhoods and educational institutions like Aalto University campus, making them more accessible to people living across the metropolitan area. The Tapiola station serves as a neighborhood hub where local shops and daily life gather around the transit point.
Trains run every six minutes during peak hours between terminals, serving thousands of daily passengers who commute between different neighborhoods. The underground stations have elevators and stairs, with platforms that are well-lit and clearly laid out.
The entire route runs completely underground and uses special pressure equalization shafts and ventilation systems to ensure safe and comfortable conditions in the tunnels. This engineering allows smooth operation even when weather changes occur.
