Pakasaivo, Meromictic lake and ancient Sámi sacred site in Muonio, Finland

Pakasaivo is a narrow mountain lake in Western Lapland surrounded by steep cliff walls rising about 60 meters above the water. The basin stretches roughly one kilometer long and sits within a rock canyon with distinctly dark, deep water.

The lake formed during the last ice age when glacial meltwater carved through rock to create the steep-sided canyon we see today. This ancient geological process shaped the dramatic landscape thousands of years ago.

The Sámi people held religious ceremonies here, particularly near the Kirkkopahta Seida rock, which remains important to them today. The site shows how deeply connected the indigenous people were to this landscape.

A short walking trail of about 200 meters leads to viewing platforms right at the water's edge, giving visitors close views of the lake and cliffs. The site has a parking area, toilet facilities, and a spot for campfires.

The water here is divided into layers: fresh water on top and oxygen-free water below that can preserve objects for hundreds of thousands of years. This unusual structure makes it a valuable place for keeping organic materials intact.
