Kumputunturi, Mountain fell in Kittilä, Finland.
Kumputunturi rises 581 meters above sea level with a summit area covered in large boulders and three structures standing at its peak. It stands as an isolated rocky mass in the Kittilä landscape, visible from considerable distances.
The mountain belongs to an ancient range that once held peaks exceeding 1000 meters before glacial periods reshaped the entire landscape. Ice age erosion reduced it to its current height over thousands of years.
A former fire watcher's cabin at the summit serves visitors today as a shelter with cooking facilities and sleeping space. It shows how the mountain was used for generations as a lookout point.
The starting point is reached by driving roughly 30 kilometers from Kittilä toward Jeesiöjärvenkylä and then following a marked trail. The route passes through distinct vegetation zones, so wear appropriate footwear and allow plenty of time for the walk.
As visitors ascend, they pass through several distinct growth zones ranging from logged areas through old forests with large pines to the windswept summit. These transitions clearly show how vegetation changes with elevation and exposure.
