Šibenik, Coastal administrative center in Šibenik-Knin County, Croatia.

Šibenik sits at the point where the Krka River meets the Adriatic Sea, surrounded by stone buildings and four medieval fortresses along the hillsides.

The settlement, first documented in 1066, developed from a Croatian fortress and remained under Venetian control from 1412 until the Republic's fall in 1797.

The Cathedral of St James, constructed between 1431 and 1536, demonstrates the technical excellence of Renaissance builders through its stone vaulting methods.

The central bus station connects travelers to major Croatian cities, while ferries depart regularly to nearby islands Prvić and Zlarin throughout summer months.

In 1895, Šibenik became the first city in the world to install a complete electrical system powered by alternating current for public street illumination.
