Bosanka, Dubrovnik, Military fortress on Mount Srđ, Dubrovnik, Croatia
Bosanka is a settlement on Mount Srđ at approximately 412 meters above sea level overlooking Dubrovnik. It features a fortress structure with panoramic views across the Old Town, the Adriatic Sea, and the islands beyond.
The fortress was built in 1806 under French General Auguste Marmont during the Napoleonic occupation of the Republic of Dubrovnik. It later became a key defensive position, particularly during the conflict in the 1990s.
The settlement played a crucial defensive role during the 1991 war, and exhibitions with photographs and military equipment now document this period for visitors. People gather here to remember the events that shaped the region's recent past.
The settlement is accessible by cable car from the Old Town or by driving up the winding road to the hilltop. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions at this elevation, particularly wind and fog.
During the 1991 siege, a small group of around fourteen defenders held the fortress against a much larger attacking force. Their resistance is remembered today as remarkable given the overwhelming odds they faced.
