Szolnok, County seat at Tisza and Zagyva rivers confluence, Hungary
Szolnok is a county seat at the meeting point of Tisza and Zagyva rivers in Hungary. The two rivers divide the center into several sections, linked by bridges that cross wide stretches of water and are lined by riverside walks.
The settlement gained importance between the 11th and 14th centuries as a distribution center for rock salt from the Maramures Mountains under Arpad dynasty rule. Later, the town grew through its position on key trade and transport routes between the capital and eastern regions.
The location brought local merchants prosperity during medieval centuries, when salt from mountains was redistributed here through river routes. This old connection to trade and river navigation still shows today along the waterfront, where warehouses from earlier times remain and boats dock.
Visitors reach the town via main roads from western or eastern directions and by train, as several international rail lines stop here. The area around the rivers is generally walkable, with the riverside paths offering easy orientation.
The town has thermal baths along the riverbank that use underground water from a depth of roughly 950 meters, reaching temperatures around 56 degrees Celsius (133 degrees Fahrenheit). This hot water enables therapeutic treatments year-round, even in winter when the air is cold and steam rises above the pools.
