Tatabánya, Industrial city in Komárom-Esztergom County, Hungary
Tatabánya sits in a valley between the Gerecse and Vértes mountains, about 55 kilometers northwest of Budapest. The city spreads along the Vienna railway line and is framed by two mountain ranges on either side.
The city emerged in 1947 from the merger of three villages following the discovery of rich coal deposits in the region. These findings quickly transformed the place into a major mining center.
The Mari Jászai Theatre hosts performances throughout the year and draws audiences from across the region. The Industrial Open-Air Museum displays mining equipment and tells the story of the city's working past.
The M1 motorway and well-developed public transportation network connect the city to Budapest. T-Busz buses reliably serve all local routes throughout the city area.
On Gerecse Mountain stands a large Turúl monument, one of Central Europe's biggest bird statues. The memorial marks the site of a medieval Hungarian victory.
