Great Market Hall, Art Nouveau market hall in Ferencváros, Hungary
The Great Market Hall is an Art Nouveau market hall in Ferencváros, Budapest. The three-story brick building has a striking roof made of red Zsolnay ceramic tiles and is surrounded by neo-gothic stone gateways.
Samu Pecz designed the building in 1897 and included a direct railway connection for goods transport. The complex soon became a central trading place for the growing city.
Vendors often speak several languages and know their products well, from pressed paprika chains to handmade gingerbread. Visitors can also find delicacies like goose liver pâté and local fruit brandies, which are offered for tasting at small stalls.
The market opens Monday through Saturday from 6 in the morning, with the ground floor offering food and produce. The upper floor houses restaurants and souvenir shops that provide a view over the activity below.
A canal system once connected the building directly to the Danube and allowed boat deliveries of fresh goods straight into the storage areas. These waterways are no longer in use today, but their traces are still visible in the basement.
