Lake Velence, Natural lake in Fejér County, Hungary

Lake Velence is a shallow natural lake in Fejér County, Hungary, covering 26 km² at the foot of the Velence Hills between Budapest and Székesfehérvár. Its average depth is about 1.5 m, and roughly a third of the surface is covered by common reed. Two artificial islands, Cserepes-sziget and Velencei-sziget, lie in the water.

Lake Velence formed 12,000 to 15,000 years ago in a trough between two parallel fault lines, alternately flooding and drying out; it has dried up fourteen times in the past 1,500 years, most recently between 1863 and 1866, when hussars drilled in the empty bed. The opening of the Southern Railway's Budapest–Székesfehérvár line in 1861 drained the southern shore, and from the late 1960s the lakebed was dredged and the shoreline built up.

The settlements around the lake like Gárdony and Velence are living centers for water activities and relaxation. People here spend their free time swimming, boating, and gathering along the shore for leisure.

The shoreline has several entry points with sandy beaches where you can easily access the water. A cycling path circles the entire lake and gives you options to explore at your own pace.

One-third of the lake is covered with reed beds that provide a natural home for many bird species. This protected area, the Dinnyés Bird Reserve, draws observers who come to spot rare species in their habitat.
