Castle of Solymár, Medieval castle ruin in Solymár, Hungary.
Castle of Solymár is a medieval ruin sitting on a hilltop above the village of Solymár, northwest of Budapest. Stone walls and foundation remains are still visible on the ground, giving a clear sense of where the main structures of the stronghold once stood.
The fortress was built in the medieval period to guard important routes through the surrounding hills. Around 1561, Ottoman forces took control of the region and destroyed the stronghold, after which it was never rebuilt.
The hilltop ruins draw walkers and day-trippers from the Budapest area, who come mainly on weekends to explore the stone remains and take in the view over Solymár. The site feels like a local secret rather than a formal tourist destination, with no crowds and no barriers around the old walls.
The hill is accessible on foot from the village, and parking is available nearby for those arriving by car. The ground around the ruins is uneven and rocky in places, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before heading up.
Just below the ruins is a cave entrance known as Ördög Lyuka, or Devil's Hole, carved into Zsiros Hill. This opening leads into a larger cave system, and the natural hollow in the rock may have been one of the reasons this particular hill was chosen as a defensive site.
