István-lápa Cave, Natural cave in Miskolc, Hungary.
István-lápa Cave is a cave in Miskolc carved through Triassic limestone with passages exceeding 8700 meters that descend over 250 meters underground. Its passages feature pronounced mineral formations, including stalactites, draperies, and columns of various sizes and shapes.
Researchers began exploring this cave in 1958 and made their first major entry in 1964 after clearing 13 meters of accumulated debris. The investigations revealed the extent and structure of one of the region's most substantial underground formations.
The cave holds national significance since 1976 due to its geological formations, including extensive stalactite flows, draperies, columns, and varied speleothems.
Access requires permits from Bükk National Park Directorate and specialized equipment such as ropes for steep sections. Visitors should arrive with good physical fitness and be prepared for challenging conditions.
This cave ranks as Hungary's longest independent underground structure with no connection to other cave systems. Water flows through multiple levels creating additional erosion features and unexpected passages.
