Sea of Stones, Szentbékkálla, Geological formation in Szentbékkálla, Hungary
The Sea of Stones near Szentbékkálla is a field of sandstone blocks spread across a forested hillside in the Káli Basin of western Hungary. The blocks vary greatly in size, lying flat, stacked, or half-buried under dense undergrowth.
This area lay under a shallow inland sea millions of years ago, leaving behind thick layers of sand and mineral-rich sediment. Over time, those layers hardened into the solid blocks that erosion gradually brought to the surface.
The name "Sea of Stones" comes from the way the blocks fill the forest floor, making the ground look like a frozen sea. Some stones have carved marks or small plaques attached by visitors over the years, showing how the place draws people who feel a connection to it.
Marked hiking trails lead from Szentbékkálla village to the site, with parking available near the entrance. The ground is uneven throughout, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before setting out.
The Kelemen Stone, a large block inside the site, can be moved by hand despite its weight, because it rests on a natural pivot point. This balance is so precise that even a gentle push sets it rocking.
