Tapolca Lake Cave

Tapolca Lake Cave extends for several kilometers beneath the town with water-filled passages and natural limestone formations at significant depth. The caverns feature multiple chambers with underground pools, shaped by fossil shells and hanging rock formations.

Workers discovered the cave system in 1903 while digging a well, and it opened to visitors in 1912. Boat tours began later and helped establish it as a popular attraction over time.

The cave's name links to the town's roots, as Tapolca comes from Slavic words for hot springs, showing how thermal features shaped the identity of this place.

Visitors can explore the cave on guided boat tours that last for a couple of hours and offer a naturalistic experience. The water is calm and the routes are accessible for most people, though sturdy shoes and warmer clothing for cooler temperatures are recommended.

The cave maintains a steady temperature and high humidity throughout the year, making it a natural spot for people with breathing difficulties. These constant conditions come from the underground water and the isolated environment beneath the town.
