Great Blasket Island, Remote island in County Kerry, Ireland
Great Blasket Island is a rocky island off the coast of County Kerry with steep sandstone cliffs and surrounding reefs. The terrain is mountainous and exposed, with sparse vegetation across the windswept landscape.
People lived on the island for centuries, building homes and raising livestock to survive in this isolated setting. In 1953, the final residents decided to leave as harsh conditions and lack of access to supplies became untenable.
The island was a center of Irish-language writing, where residents documented their daily experiences in personal accounts and stories. Visitors walk through the spaces where these authors lived and worked.
Access is by ferry from several mainland piers, with the crossing taking roughly one hour. Most visits last four to five hours, so weather and sea conditions will affect your planning.
Five restored cottages are available for visitors, but without electricity, offering a window into how former residents lived. This allows you to experience firsthand the conditions that shaped life for generations on this rugged island.
